Jason
A couple days later found Jason helping Gio into his SUV for a follow-up with his doctor.
The drive over was quiet but not uncomfortable. Since they talked, the tension previously hanging over the house fled, and things between them felt easy, more like the night they first met. The only real difference between the man from a year ago and the one sitting next to him was the quiet. Gio seemed more pensive than before, and Jason wondered if his own actions combined with Gioâs history with his family caused the change.
When they pulled into the small lot of the ivory-colored stone building, Jason stopped in front of the entrance and unloaded the wheelchair before helping Gio out of the car and into the lobby.
Then, he climbed back into his car and drove around to find a parking space. Trees lining the back of the lot provided shade from the sun and would keep the car from getting too hot while they were inside.
The appointment made Jason nervous. Part of him hoped everything would be fine and the doctor would give him the all-clear to return home, but another part of him hoped the doctor would tell him Gio needed to stay with Jason.
He couldnât understand the desire to keep Gio close, the constant need to touch him. Friends should have been enough but hanging out with him didnât come close to curbing his need for Gio, even if he still failed to put a name to the need.
And then, there were the texts.
Jason pulled his phone from his pocket as he headed inside and reread it: Youâre incredible, did you know that? So smart. I didnât know that about you. The secret nerd inside. I missed you. The way your body moves, the way your eyes light up. Body and Brains, so perfect.
The words sent warmth racing through him, and a smile tugged at the corners of Jasonâs mouth. Whatever motivated Gio to send the texts, Jason didnât mind them at all. This made his fourth, and he treasured each one. A little silly, perhaps, to hang on to them, but he couldnât bring himself to delete them.
Although, this latest one seemed a little different, a little off from the ones before. A little more intimate than the friendly ones. Did it mean something? Was Gio trying to tell him something without having to face rejection? If that was his goal, Jason wouldnât say anything about the texts. It would feel odd, anyway, when theyâd spoken of them a few days ago.
As Jason crossed the threshold of the clinic, the rush of cool air felt good after the heat from outside. A quick scan of the room revealed Gio sitting just off to the right in his chair.
Striding over, he settled his hand on Gioâs shoulder, causing him to startle. âSorry, kitten.â
Gio scowled and wrinkled his nose at Jason, the same way an angry kitten might. His response to the nickname was one of the reasons Jason persisted with it.
